(This is a focus piece on a French photographer who creates 3D lenticular portraits using a HD Camcorder.)
Say the words ‘family portrait’ and brace yourself for a barrage of protestation and flippancy. In the past, family photos have run the gamut from conservative to kitsch. Well, here is something to bring a smile to your face: those dull, half-day long studio sessions are about to become a thing of the past. Using his expertise in lenticular photography, Parisian photographer Henri Clement has created a progressive and exciting new technique to take family portraiture to the next level.

Using a high definition digital camcorder set on a rolling track, Clement has condensed the time it takes to capture a set of 28 frames to one and a half seconds. Henri described his process in a recent interview with Lenstar Lenticular.
“In 2005, I conceive the installation of a dedicated tool comprising a motorized rail that allows me to take high speed shots. Since then I have continued to perfect my personal work taking an interest in portraits and live models. Since 2007, I organize regular exhibitions to showcase my personal photographic creations in 3D.”
So how is Clement’s ingenuity changing both traditional portraiture and the art of 3D?

Using auto-stereoscopic techniques, Clement’s 3D lenticular portfolio does not require the use of special glasses or instruments to be used by the viewer. By capturing images of a subject from a series of different perspectives, Clement has bypassed the problem of ending up with a limited display. His methods allow the subject to always show their good side, as the final perspective is chosen at the time of printing.

Clement’s business is located in Paris, though Clement himself is a regular on the exhibition circuit. Since 1995, he has specialized in creating lenticular images, preparing the photo shoots in his studio. Like any professional worth his salt, Clement chooses to handle all of the post production aspects ‘in house,’ including the printing.

In 2001, Henri created L’Imbricateur (the Interleaver), and dedicated himself to creating lenticular images out of various media sources, including drawings and computer graphics.
A recent exhibition by Clement and his company Studio Lenticulaire, was featured on 3Dfocus.net:
Both the interview and the demonstration are must see viewing for any photographer who is interested in great innovations in lenticular 3D photography.
